When it comes to infants, I focus on something far more important first, survival.

Before a child can learn to swim, they learn how to:

How does a child learn a life-saving skill like “swim–float–swim”? 💦

It’s not taught all at once—
it’s built step by step, with intention and consistency.

Children are guided through a simple, repeatable sequence:
swim → roll onto their back → float, rest, and breathe → then recover and continue swimming

Each part is practiced daily in short, focused lessons.

Over time, this sequence becomes instinctive, something their body knows how to do without panic.

That’s the goal.

Because in a real water situation, a child doesn’t need to “remember” what to do…
their body responds automatically.

We started in borrowed pools, and this season, we finally have a home. 🏠

When I first launched Safe & Strong Swim Academy, I was a traveling instructor with a dream and a handful of founding families who chose to begin this journey with me.

This season marks a new chapter.

Safe & Strong Swim Academy now has a home at @bahiadeloso 🌊💙🫶🏽 We are so grateful to Bahia del Oso for opening their space to us this season and for sharing in the belief that water safety and survival swim instruction truly matter.

With access to a beautiful, heated pool, we’re able to:

✨ Provide consistently warm water
✨ Serve more families

Last season, I had a waitlist, and traveling limited how many children I could reach. This year, I planned ahead so that more little ones can gain the life-saving skills they deserve.

Bahia del Oso will serve as our primary home this season, while private travel lessons will still be available upon request and based on availability.

Your child’s safety in the water is not something I take lightly.

Hi, I’m Yvette Segovia, Certified Survival Swim Instructor and founder of Safe and Strong Swim Academy (est. 2025) 🐘

Here’s a little bit about me — who I am and why you can trust me with your child.

My career didn’t begin in the pool. I spent over 11 years as a Registered Dental Assistant, more than half of that time in pediatric dentistry. Caring for families — especially little ones — has always been at the heart of what I do. Those years taught me patience, attentiveness, and how to help children feel safe and confident.

When COVID changed the world, it changed my life as well. I stepped away from dentistry and later became a full-time nanny to a sweet little girl named Abby. That season strengthened my nurturing spirit and prepared my heart even more for motherhood.

In 2021, I became a first-time mama to our beautiful Yamila. Life with my wonderful husband, Rick, and the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom has been such a blessing. We are a faith-filled family and active members of Third Coast Church.

For a long time, I believed my calling would be inside the four walls of a church. I studied ministry at Stark College & Seminary, earning my certificate with dreams of serving in children’s ministry as a director. But when I enrolled my daughter in survival swim lessons, something shifted.

I saw love.
I saw patience.
I saw life-saving skills being poured into children.

And I knew I could make that same impact beyond the church walls.

Each season of my life has shaped the compassion, resilience, and strength I now bring into the pool — and into every lesson I teach.

Through it all, one thing has remained constant:
I love people.
And I love Jesus.

This is me.

🧐What will the first lessons look like?
In the initial lessons, your child will be welcomed into the water in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. My main focus will be building a bond of trust with my students, allowing them to see me as a safe place. When I go from stranger to friend, that's when the magic happens.

😫What if my child cries?
It's quite common for children to feel apprehensive or even cry during their first few lessons. I am a new person to your child, in a new environment. Tears will come, and I'll be there to show care and compassion. I will work closely with your child to help them feel more comfortable in the water, and parents are welcome to stay nearby for reassurance.

🏊‍♂️As my child progresses through the next several weeks of lessons, what can I expect?
As your child advances over the upcoming weeks, you can expect them to develop proficiency in more advanced skills such as breath control, kicking, swimming short distances, and floating, along with essential safety techniques. Upon mastering each skill, they will receive a certificate, marking their progress as they prepare for the survival swim test. Each week builds upon the last, with a strong emphasis on skill development and water safety awareness.

👨‍🎓What will my child need to do to successfully complete the survival swim test?
To successfully complete the survival swim test, your child will need to demonstrate their ability to float for two minutes or longer, swim-float-swim a designated distance, and safely return to the pool's edge, stairs, or bench. On graduation day, students will be required to wear winter clothing or pajamas to simulate a real-life scenario, as many children unexpectedly fall into water fully clothed. This preparation ensures they instinctively know how to respond in an emergency.
